Natural Language Querying of Historical Data Bases

چکیده

In this paper we examine the connection between two areas of semantics, namely the semantics of historical databases and the semantics of natural language querying, and link them together via a common view of the semantics of time. Since the target application domain is an historical database, we present the essential features of the Historical Relational Database Model (HRDM), an extension to the relational model motivated by the desire to incorporate more "real worldY semantics into a database a t the conceptual level. We then present the essential features of QEIII, a formally defined English database query language whose semantic and pragmatic theory, based on a Montague-type semantics, makes explicit reference to the notion of denotation with respect to a moment of time. We demonstrate the use of this language to query an example historical database, and discuss the issues of how to provide both a semantic and a pragmatic interpretation for questions within a model-theoretic framework.

Querying biomedical Linked Data with natural language questions

Recent and intensive research in the biomedical area enabled to accumulate and disseminate biomedical knowledge through various knowledge bases increasingly available on the Web. The exploitation of this knowledge requires to create links between these bases and to use them jointly. Linked Data, the SPARQL language and interfaces in natural language question answering provide interesting soluti...

Natural Language Question Analysis for Querying Biomedical Linked Data

Biomedical knowledge is disseminated in knowledge bases which become increasingly available on the Web. While using biomedical Linked Data is crucial, life-science researchers may have difficulties using SPARQL language. Interfaces based on Natural Language question-answering are recognised to be suitable for querying knowledge bases. In this paper, we propose a method for translating natural l...

Evaluation of SPARQL query generation from natural language questions

SPARQL queries have become the standard for querying linked open data knowledge bases, but SPARQL query construction can be challenging and timeconsuming even for experts. SPARQL query generation from natural language questions is an attractive modality for interfacing with LOD. However, how to evaluate SPARQL query generation from natural language questions is a mostly open research question. ...

Querying Structured Data with Lite Natural Language

Querying and managing structured data in natural language is a challenging task due to its ambiguity (syntactic and semantic) and its expressiveness. On the other hand, querying, for example, a database is a well-defined and unambigous task, namely, that of evaluating some formal query of a limited expressiveness over the instance of a database schema. This problem can be tackled, we believe, b...

How Useful Are Natural Language Interfaces to the Semantic Web for Casual End-Users?

Natural language interfaces offer end-users a familiar and convenient option for querying ontology-based knowledge bases. Several studies have shown that they can achieve high retrieval performance as well as domain independence. This paper focuses on usability and investigates if NLIs are useful from an end-user’s point of view. To that end, we introduce four interfaces each allowing a differe...
